Technical regulations

1. INVITATION

This is the official invitation to all National Chess Federations of FIDE to participate.
The organizers invite all senior Ladies and Gentlemen throughout the world to participate at the 33rd FIDE World Senior Chess Championships (50+ 65+), which is to be held in Gallipoli – Puglia, from 20th October (arrival day) till 2nd November (departure day).

The registration period ends on 1st September 2025.

2. PARTICIPATION & PRIZE FUND

2.1 In accordance with the FIDE tournament rules, there shall be the following categories:

Senior 50+ open to all players who are 50 or older in 2025
Senior 65+ open to all players who are 65 or older in 2025
Women 50+ open to all women who are 50 or older in 2025
Women 65+ open to all women who are 65 or older in 2025

The Championship are open tournaments for players registered by their Federation, FIDE member Federations shall have the right to send as many players as they wish.

•2.2 With FIDE support the Organizer should ensure representation of all continents and at least 20 players in each of the categories.

2.3 FIDE Events Commission (EVE) is responsible for exceptional decisions regarding final configuration of the categories mentioned in categories above in cases when requirements of Rule 2.2 are not met. All decision in this regard must be made at least two weeks before the start of competition.

2.4 The top 3 players from each category of the previous year of FIDE World Senior Individual Chess Championshipss shall have personal rights to participate and their places cannot be substituted.
In addition, the top 3 players from each category of the previous year of Continental Senior Individual Chess Championshipss are qualified with personal right and their places cannot be substituted.

2.5 Players, other than Invited Players, shall be classified as Additional Players. All other persons, other than players shall be classified as Accompanying Persons.

2.6 In order to provide appropriate tournament conditions, players must complete carefully the official registration form and submit to the Organizers by 1st September 2024. Further participations may not be accepted, or an additional fee of 70 € euros may be requested according to the FIDE regulations.

4. TECHNICAL REGULATIONS

4.1 The Championship shall be played in 11 rounds of the Swiss System. The Time Control will be in accordance with the FIDE rules: 90 minutes for 40 moves followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an addition of 30 seconds per move starting from move one.
Default time at the start of all 11 rounds is 30 minutes.

4.2 Tie break criteria:
a) Result of direct encounters between the tied players (applies only if all tied players have played each other),
b) Buchholz cut 1,
c) Buchholz,
d) the greater number of games played with black,
e) the greater number of wins.
The title of “Grandmaster” will be conferred to the winner of the 33rd FIDE World Senior Chess Championship 2025 (50+ and 65+) who will receive Trophy and gold medal. The second place will receive a silver medal, the third place is awarded a bronze medal. The same rules for the medals award are applied to the participating women players, who play separately within their own championship.

4.3 Direct titles available to winners subject to rating criteria. Direct Titles are awarded according to

4.4 FIDE over the board title norms is also possible for the other players based on their performance and them opponent’s titles/ratings as per FIDE Handbook requirements.

4.5 FIDE Anti Cheating Measures and guidelines are in effect during the championship.

4.6 At any time, any circumstance or unforeseen situation not covered in these Regulations shall be referred to the FIDE President for the final decision.

5. APPEALS & APPEALS COMMITTEE

5.1 Protests against decisions of the Chief Arbiter or his assistants must be submitted in written form to the Chairman of the appeals committee within 30 minutes after the completion of the respective game.
The protest must be accompanied with the sum of 200 € as a deposit from the signatory. The deposit must be handed to the Chairman of the appeals committee. If the appeal is granted, the sum shall be returned immediately. If the appeal is refused, the deposit may be forfeited to FIDE.

5.2 Appeals Committee will be announced in due time.

6. FIDE TECHNICAL OFFICIALS

6.1 The Chief Arbiter will be announced in a due time.

6.2 FIDE Technical Delegate and FIDE Officials will be announced in due time.

7. OTHER REGULATIONS

7.1 Electronic Devices, Wrist Watches & Pens: Mobile phones, electronic devices, and any other radio frequency source (except for medical purposes upon authorization provided by the CA), wrist watches (all type of wrist watches) and personal pens are prohibited inside the tournament hall.
